Annie's Rescue

Updated August 17, 2005

A Horse Named “Annie”

This is a story chronicling rescue efforts in the North Florida community of Jacksonville about a horse named “Annie”. Annie was rescued and taken to Ray Tagliaone’sHolistic Horse Care” Center. He had her day and night in ICU care and treatment for 10 days. Dr. Peggy Fuller donated her time, supplies, medicine and her expertise and indicated in late June 2005 that there was a chance Annie could be saved. Annie was severely neglected by her original owner and near death when found.

In the second week of July Annie showed some improvement. Annie has a big heart and perked up when she heard voices and was otherwise alert, eating and drinking and all. Sherry Smith and Jennifer Rapp of Dogwood Farms indicated they could take her into rehab if the Judge in the case so allowed. Thanks to the timely response of Ray Tagliaone, Linda Johnson, Sherry Smith and Jennifer Rapp, Carol Wallace and many other supporters and volunteers, Annie has gotten a second chance and a new home!

On July 12, 2005 , Annie became officially the property of Clay County . At that time she was already standing on her own and eating well. All other functions appeared normal. Her lesions had begun to heal and she was putting on weight.

It was now up to the Judge and the Vet in charge of her stay to decide whether she will be allowed to live! She had already beaten all odds and miraculously was making improvement daily; thanks to Jennifer who faithfully went to see Annie every day, giving her sponge baths, wrapping her legs, and just caressing and talking to her.

Dr. Peggy Fuller believes that Annie will slowly ‘recover’ to at least be able to walk on her own and live out her life being fed and taken care of by the many volunteers, horse people and others who have offered contributions for her continued medical and nutritional needs. Dr. Fuller also volunteered to take Annie in until such a time her needs for constant attention diminishes.

Finally, on July 16, 2005 , after a lot of ‘red tape’ with the County, Annie will have a home with Sherry Smith and Jennifer at Dogwood Farms in Jacksonville . Sherry said, “The court documents listed Annie as a Tennessee Walker. Annie now has a ‘Supermask’ and two ultrasonic ‘Pest Repellers’ attaché to her mask to ward off mosquitoes, fleas and ticks that may carry West Nile Virus, Lyme Disease, etc”. All this was graciously donate by Paula with the ‘Rusty Stirrup’. Thank You Paula! “Annie dropped her head when we put on the mask as if she had worn one before…which seems highly unlikely. God continues to move mountains on Annie’s behalf”.

Carol Wallace, a compassionate supporter from Sweetwater Paradise in Middleburg , Florida , submitted pictures of Annie, taken at her adoption.

Now on July 18, 2005 Dr. Fuller is treating Annie! “The initial report is favorable and more will be known after the results of the blood tests. She also removed two abscesses on her left front giving us quite a scare when her heart rate went from 76 to 56!” said Sherry. “ We soaked her foot and wrapped it with Magnapaste and diapers. She should have more relief tomorrow”.

A garage sale was held on July 23, 2005 . “We collected $500.00 in cash for items donated, a $200 check was given as a donation and another $150 is forthcoming for Annie”. Sherry went by to check on her and spray her with fly spray but she was too busy eating to pose for the camera! The man who starved her came to the yard sale!  He came over to the table where we had a donation jar and posters with Annie's pictures, etc.  He was "requested" under no uncertain terms by several of our shoppers that he didn't need to be there. He tried to defend himself and said we didn't know the whole story. Well, Annie tells the whole story herself. We were just so thankful for such a successful sale.

The hearing for the owner, is on August 8, 2005 and is open to the public. Judge Townsend will be in attendance for this hearing. The owner is being charged with a first-degree misdemeanor!!  It seems the criminals today have more rights and protection than the victims.

So what’s in store for Annie now! Only time will tell and hopefully these wrongs will be righted. Any one with an interest in these types of crimes and the sentencing should contact their legislators and the Governor. We will continue to keep you updated of Annie’s progress as the days, weeks and months go by. We thank everyone who was involved in this effort and keep up with your good works and prayers.

Here' are a few pictures taken during her recuperation and at her adoption. Click here to view Annie's Slide Show of her progress for the month of June and July.
