THE AMERICAN INDIAN HORSE
AND IT'S REGISTRY

Updated March 7, 2005

PRESS RELEASE from the American Indian Horse Registry.

Twenty-five In Texas!!

2004 marks the 25th anniversary of the AIHR's move to Texas from Arizona, and we're having a party to celebrate and to introduce our newest Indian Horse 'stars'. Two of our champion American Indian Horses have been chosen by Breyer to be models in their line and we will have the models on display at our open house along with the AIHR collection of Native American regalia of the southern plains and antique cowboy gear. Join us on April 25 (rain date May 2) 2-5 p.m. to celebrate.

Founded in 1961 in California with the stated purpose of preserving and promoting those horses descended from the mounts brought to the Americas by the Spanish Conquistadors and acquired by the various nomadic Native American Nations, the AIHR now includes their hybrids and descendants. This purpose of preservation remained with the Registry during the move to Arizona in 1968 and ultimately to Rancho San Francisco near Lockhart TX, a part of Texas known as the Comancheria by the Spaniards. At the time of the move in 1979, there were approximately 500 hundred horses registered, there were no shows held and there were no affiliated clubs or riding groups.

Today over 4,000 horses have been registered, there are clubs in Texas, South Carolina, Arizona, Mississippi and Wisconsin. An annual National Show is held the 3rd weekend in September in Corsicana TX (south of Dallas).

There are five classifications of Americn Indian Horse, from the Originals whose pedigrees trace back to Native American nations and families, to AA or half Original, to A which is unknown breeding but strong Indian Horse type, to Modern for those modern bred horses who show Indian Horse traits, and the Ponies who are primarily POA, Galiceno, etc. For more information about AIHR or the upcoming Open House, please contact us at 512-398-6642, email nanci@indianhorse.com.
